7, 2001 Park Support Organizations, National Park Superintendents, and State Park Managers: Now
that summer has come to an end, it is time for us to focus attention on
our fall meeting scheduled for November
16 & 17 at George
Washington Birthplace National Monument in
Westmoreland County, Virginia. The park is located on Rt. 204 just off
of Rt. 3, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg and I-95. Friday,
November 16:
An optional fundraising seminar, a special eagle tour at Caledon Natural
Area, and a winery tour, wine tasting, dinner and speaker at Ingleside
Plantation Winery. Guest speaker for the dinner is Joe Elton,
Director of State Parks. (The Virginia State Park System was the winner of
the 2001 Gold Medal Award for Excellence in the Field of Park and
Recreation Management.) Saturday,
November 17:
The Virginia Association For Parks business meeting from 10:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. The fundraising seminar and the VAFP business meeting will be held in the Loghouse at the Birthplace. As you drive on Rt. 204 approaching the park, you will see a one-tenth-scale version of the Washington Monument at the park boundary. If you turn right at the monument you will go into the Visitor Center parking lot. To get to the Loghouse, follow the road around the monument and turn right onto another park road that goes to the picnic area and burial ground. As you follow the park road, you will turn right onto another park road, you will turn right onto another park road when you see the small sign for the conference center. Follow this road to the Loghouse. The Loghouse is a white building on the right side of the road. Please see the enclosed park map (mailed). These
events are open to state and national park staff, park volunteers, park
support organizations, and others who care to participate. We ask each
park to send at least one staff member. Complete
agenda for Friday and Saturday’s events is enclosed. Spouses, family
members or guests are welcome to participate in the tour of Caledon
Natural Area, winery tour, reception, and dinner on Friday. Free
Accommodations: The
Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has graciously offered
us FREE overnight accommodations in the cabins at Westmoreland State Park just a few minutes away from George Washington Birthplace.
The 11 cabins will be reserved on
a first-come-first-served basis. Cabins will have to be shared, so
please provide your preference when you make reservations. Please
contact Nancy Heltman, Reservation Center Manager at (804) 786-5057. Hotel
